Knitting Basics

Creating cool things from knitting

Knitting is a great hobby. It is relaxing. Plus, it is useful.

When knitting you can create things your family needs such as sweaters or gloves. You can also create unique presents when knitting that you can give your friends and other family members. Many of these types of presents are inexpensive to create and are very appreciated once given.

It isn't that hard to come up with unique and cool knitting projects. Actually, there are a number of resources that can help you find your next project.

First, there is the obvious starting place: your local Fabric store or department store that has a fabric section. You can find many kits at these stores or instruction manuals that will guide you toward your next project. Some of these will come with your yarn and some will just tell you the type and colors you should buy.

A second choice may be the internet. There are many sites that caters to knitting and knitting projects. These sites even post complete instructions to many projects. Plus, if you don't find what you are looking for there are generally members of these sites that can help you.

A third choice may be a craft mall. Most craft malls will have many knit pieces on sale. Many of the sellers are actually the people who did the knitting in the first place. They can advise you on how to create certain projects and may even sell the supplies to get you started.

A fourth choice for finding ideas is through knitting magazines. These are sold at most book stores and at most fabric stores. You can also subscribe to most of these and have them delivered right to your mailbox in plenty of time to prepare that next big holiday project.

Finally, you can come up with ideas through friends and through shopping. Friends can give you ideas and if they are knitters, as well, they may offer you instructions on some of their fun creations. How can shopping help you find ideas? Simply put you shop, you look, and your brain begins forming ideas. It can sometimes be as simple as that.

When one first begins knitting, they usually start with the small projects:

Scarves

Hats

Gloves

Wash Cloths

Bonnets

Baby boots

Baby hoods

Baby caps

Pot holders

Hair Scrunches

Coin purses

Then they may venture onto easy, but bigger projects such as:

Furniture dollies

Throws

Baby blankets

Bedspreads

Comforters

Jackets

Shawls

Ponchos

Pillow Cases

Chair cushions

Chair covers

Baby Clothes

Leggings

Handbags

Make Up bags

Tote Bags

Blouses

Belts

Drawstring bags

Necklaces

Bracelets

Anklets

Socks with pom poms

Dresses

Neckties

Sleeveless tops

Hooded Shawl

Capes

Berets

Neckties

Yet, you don't have to stick with the common knitting jobs or projects once you become more accomplished. You may want to try some different sort of projects such as:

Knitting a cover for your cell phone

Wall hangings

Pins to wear on your coat or sweater

Sweaters for your dog or cat

Checker games to play

Dolls

Finger puppets

Calenders

Rugs

Jerseys

Centerpieces

Coasters

Placemats

Napkin Rings

Table runners

Doorstops

Baby sling

Ear muffs

Socks

Backpacks

Messenger bags

Fake fruits for displays

Old fashioned wig type boxes

Exfoliating puffs for bath

Mitts to keep bars of soap in

Covers for boring flower pots

Lamp shades

Easter Baskets

Display baskets

Blankets with pockets

Animal toys

Plus, don't forget all the interesting and cool holiday projects you can make such as:

Ornaments for your tree in the shape of angels, snowmen, wreaths or candy canes

Christmas stocking

Santa's hat

A valentine heart

A St. Patrick's Day hat

Holiday garland

Wreaths for all seasons

Small scarves to use in place of ribbon on presents

Bunny rabbits

Easter baskets

Easter eggs

Each pattern you choose may call for different types of yarn and different needles. Pay close attention to what you will need before you try to start any project. Also make sure you are relaxed and have plenty of time when beginning each project.

You may want to invest or consider knitting your own bag, to store your current project. Then you can take it with you during those long car rides, long waiting times at the doctor's office, etc.

Of course, what you make while knitting is not as important as to whether you are enjoying yourself and what you are making. Remember knitting is suppose to be a relaxing activity.
